After the Great Fire of Rome in AD 64, Emperor Nero built the enormous Golden House, complete with banquet halls, gardens, lakes, and pavilions. While formal gladiatorial combats were usually held in amphitheaters, Nero blurred the line between palace and arena by staging public entertainments and gladiatorial contests at his imperial residence.
